Centre for Inclusive Cities

The concept of the inclusive city is derived from the idea that the city belongs to ‘ALL’. Inclusive approaches are a major policy focus for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are at the core of SDG -11 ‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’. To ensure that tomorrow’s cities provide opportunities and better living conditions for all, amongst various types of inclusion, spatial inclusion, social inclusion, and digital inclusion are foremost i.e., the provision of urban infrastructures (such as housing, water, sanitation and transportation needs) and digital wiring of infrastructure with ICT, which is not only sensitive to the needs of all the users but also intelligible to them.?

As Indian cities are undergoing massive urban transformation, nearly doubling the size of people living in cities and urban areas in the next twenty years, the shaping and development of our cities need to be inclusive- meaning that aspirations for all the inhabitants are met. This requires a paradigm shift in the way we envision our cities and take decisions.?

An inclusive city design will ensure that the way our cities are being transformed and shaped, they exist for ALL.

In the proposed Centre for Inclusive Cities, mainstreaming Inclusivity as a key pillar (along with other pillars such as sustainability and equity) for deciding on the processes of city building and development is focused.?

The objectives of the centre are:

1. To engage in cutting-edge research on the inclusive city agenda with comprehensive and multidisciplinary approaches.
2. To undertake partnerships with urban institutions and agencies involved in research and practice on inclusive cities at the global and local levels.
3. To mainstream inclusive city approaches in the development curriculum of architecture, urban design, urban planning and related fields.
4. To develop the centre as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ on inclusive city approaches at the national level.

Centre invites researchers and working professionals for collaborate on following themes:? Inclusive Design, Public Participation, Vision-making, Digital Futures, Transport Planning and Mobility Studies, Gender and Sexuality, Masculinity Studies, Education, and Singles Studies.
