A special lecture on National Income accounting was delivered by Prof. Meenakshi Rajeev, RBI chair professor, ISEC Bengaluru for semester II students of B.A. Double Majors’. Students from Department of Commerce also attended the lecture series. The lecture started off with defining of national income accounting and was followed by introducing two major macroeconomic indicators i.e. GDP and GNP. Further, students were introduced various approaches to calculate NIA which includes income approach, expenditure approach and value-added approach. Further, the resource person then introduced the students how NIA is calculated in India using bottom up approach i.e. breaking GDP into three major sectors and sub sectors.? Then a detailed explanation was provided to students as to how data is collected in each subsector for calculating for GDP. Through this student were also introduced to various data sets and institutions which collect them.

The objective of the event was to acquaint the students with complexities involved in measuring national income of a country. There was an activity for Double major’s Economics students to choose a country of their choice and then were tasked to collect secondary data – GDP data at disaggregate level and explain the trends of the chosen country.
