Shaping Shivamogga’s Smart City Transition

Situated on the banks River Tunga, the city forming the gateway to Malenadu and the Western Ghats is Shivamogga- one of the hundred cities chosen by Government of India for the Smart Cities project launched by the Ministry of Urban Development. The captivating touristic city, in the Food Cradle of Karnataka, houses several natural and cultural marvels in addition to a number of educational institutions. The MAHE team endeavoured to render Shivamogga not just smart but sustainable.

After undertaking extensive site analyses, stakeholder consultations and deliberations on feasible strategies, postgraduate students of the Urban Design and Development programme (MUDD) presented a Sustainability Action Plan for Shivamogga Smart City to City Commissioner and Managing Director of Shivamogga Smart City Ltd, Mr Mullai Muhilan M.P.

Short-term project proposals focussed on integration and networking of ecological layers and improving their accessibility and preservation. Special emphasis was given to enhancing the city’s interface with the Tunga River. Strengthening relationships between people, culture and physical and built environment lay at the heart of the plan. It included means of strengthening public transport, rejuvenation of water bodies, integrated waste management systems as well as enriching Shivamogga’s cultural vibrancy. The holistic roadmap resounds the aspirations of UN SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.

The studies and proposals were developed under the guidance of Dr. Nandineni Rama Devi, Mr. Purushottam Kesar and Ms. Nivedhitha Venkatakrishnan of School of Architecture and Planning, MAHE, 沙巴体育.
