Report of the activities conducted as part of the 沙巴体育 Day of Midwives (IDM) 2023

1. In-service Education Program:
The faculty of the Department of Obstetric and Gynaecological (OBG) Nursing along with II year MSc nursing students – OBG specialty, 沙巴体育 College of Nursing (MCON), MAHE, 沙巴体育, organized an In-service education program for the staff nurses of Women and Child Health Block, Kasturba Hospital, 沙巴体育 based on the 沙巴体育 Day of Midwives (IDM) theme “Together again; from evidence-based to reality.” The topic for the in-service education was ‘Real world significance of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) for the midwife”, which was deliberated by Ms. Shobha, Lecturer, Department of OBG Nursing, MCON, MAHE, 沙巴体育, who spoke a great deal on why EBP is essential for the practice of midwifery. She also elaborated on how EBP in nursing has changed a great deal of midwifery practice and how redundancy in professional practice is and can be reduced to a great extent. Many examples to explain this concept were also provided, which encouraged many nurses and midwives, to participate actively in the discussion that took place at the end of the session. A total of 36 participants, who included the nursing staff, Assistant Nursing Supervisors (ANSs), and the Nursing Quality team of Kasturba Hospital, 沙巴体育 attended the In-service education program. Participants provided feedback for the program.
Following the in-service education program, some fun games and activities were held for the staff nurses, who participated very actively in all the games and also expressed that they enjoyed the program. Ms. Sweety Fernandes and Mrs. Pratibha Kamath, Assistant Professors, Dept of OBG Nursing, MCON, MAHE, 沙巴体育 conducted the fun games and activities. Feedback for the session and prizes distribution to all winners of the fund games and activities were done by Dr. Suba Sooria P, Head - Nursing Services, Nursing Section, Kasturba Hospital, and Dr. Sonia R.B D’Souza, Professor and Head, Department of OBG Nursing, MCON, MAHE, 沙巴体育. Mrs. Reena Veneciya D’Souza, II Year MSc nursing student, Department of OBG Nursing, MCON, MAHE, 沙巴体育 welcomed all the participants and compered the program. Dr. Maria Pais, Assistant Professor – Senior scale, Dept of OBG Nursing, MCON, MAHE, 沙巴体育, and the program coordinator – IDM 2023 gave away the vote of thanks.

2. Outreach Programme:

The faculty of the Department of Obstetric and Gynaecological (OBG) Nursing along with II year MSc nursing students – OBG specialty, 沙巴体育 College of Nursing (MCON), MAHE, 沙巴体育, in collaboration with Rotary Club, Shankarpura also organized an outreach program for the staff nurses, Community Health Officers (CHOs) and Asha workers in Rotary Bhavan, Shankarpura based on the IDM 2023 theme “Together again; from evidence to reality”.
The topic on “Antenatal care – EBP” was delivered by Dr. Maria Pais, Assistant Professor, Dept. of OBG Nursing, MCON, MAHE, 沙巴体育. She discussed the role of the midwife in promoting antenatal care in an evidence-based manner and improving care by practicing EBP. A total of 40 participants attended the program and also provided feedback for the program. Following the session, some fun games were also conducted for all the participants by Mrs. Reena Dsouza, Mrs. Elmy Jacob, and Mrs. Violet Elveera Menezes, II-year?Nursing students, Dept of OBG Nursing, MCON, MAHE, 沙巴体育. Prizes were distributed to the winners.

Radio Talk:
A radio talk was organized on behalf of 沙巴体育 Midwives’ Day, on the theme. A small skit that depicted the importance of EBP in antenatal elderly primi care was enacted by Mrs. Reena Dsouza, Mrs. Elmy Jacob, Mrs. Violet Elveera Menezes, II-year Nursing students, and Dr. Maria Pais, Assistant Professor, Dept of OBG Nursing, MCON, MAHE, 沙巴体育. The skit depicted the importance of early registration, availing of facilities provided by the government for antenatal women, and the importance of EBP in providing antenatal care by midwives, ANMs, and ASHA workers.
Following the skit, a short talk on the importance of celebrating IDM worldwide, the importance of midwives for the health care delivery system as well as the community, and how the public needs to understand, respect, and acknowledge the health care services provided by midwives – who are frontline workers providing quality maternal and newborn care services was deliberated by Dr. Sonia R. B D’Souza, Professor and HoD, Department of OBG Nursing, MCON, MAHE, 沙巴体育. The Radio talk was broadcasted on Radio 沙巴体育 90.4 MHz on 05/05/2023 from 5:00 pm to 5.15?pm and 06/05/2023 from 1:00 pm to 1.15?pm.
